EV Charger Installation: Paperwork and Notifications to Keep

Installing an electric vehicle home charge point is one of the most common electrical upgrades in UK homes today. Adding a dedicated 7kW or 22kW charger represents a substantial continuous electrical load on your property's electrical system and the local supply grid. Because of this, the installation involves specific regulatory sign-offs, safety documentation, and statutory notifications that every homeowner should retain.
Whether you are planning an installation or have recently had one completed, knowing what documents your installer must provide protects you against safety issues, warranty disputes, and delays when you eventually decide to sell your home.
1. Electrical Certification and Part P Compliance
Under Building Regulations in England and Wales, installing a new dedicated circuit for an EV charge point is notifiable electrical work under Part P. In Scotland, similar standards apply under the Building Standards system. Your installer should be registered with an approved competent person scheme, such as NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA.
Once the work is complete, you should receive two critical documents relating to the installation: an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. The EIC confirms that the new circuit, consumer unit connections, earthing arrangements, and protection devices (such as Type A or Type B RCDs) meet BS 7671 standards. Within a few weeks of completion, you should also receive the Building Regulations certificate directly from the competent person scheme, confirming the local authority has been formally notified.
2. DNO Notification and Grid Approvals
One of the most frequently overlooked steps in EV charger installations is the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) notification. The DNO is the company responsible for the regional power lines and cables bringing electricity to your meter—distinct from the energy supplier that sends your bill.
Because a 7kW charger draws roughly 32 amps—often around a third to a half of a standard domestic electrical supply—the DNO must be informed through the Energy Networks Association (ENA) process. Depending on your home's incoming supply and main fuse rating, this happens in one of two ways:
- Connect and Notify: If your supply capacity is sufficient (typically a 100A main fuse) and the charger meets standard limits, the installer can fit the unit and notify the DNO within 28 days of completion.
- Apply to Connect: If the property has a smaller incoming supply (such as a 60A fuse), a looped supply shared with a neighbour, or an unmetered connection, the installer must apply for DNO approval before installing the charger.
- DNO Fuse Upgrade Confirmation: If the DNO upgraded your main service head or un-looped your supply prior to installation, keep written confirmation of this work.
Always ask your installer for a copy of the DNO submission confirmation or reference number. If the DNO requires load curtailment or specific configuration settings on your charger, retain those specifications alongside the application.
3. Smart Charge Point Regulations and Hardware Documentation
Under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations, all home chargers sold in the UK must incorporate smart functionality, cybersecurity protections, and default off-peak charging schedules. The installer or manufacturer should provide a Statement of Compliance confirming that the unit meets these statutory requirements.
In addition to legal compliance sheets, keep the manufacturer's warranty certificate, the exact model and serial numbers, and the installer's commissioning checklist. If the installation included secondary hardware—such as external data cables, separate energy meters, or Current Transformer (CT) clamps installed at the meter tails to manage household electrical load—note their locations and operational settings.
4. Photographic Records of Cable Routing and Earthing
EV charger cables often run under floorboards, through external walls, or underground through gardens and driveways. Clear photographs of these cable routes before they are buried, plastered over, or paved provide essential safety context for any future building or landscaping work. Photographing the consumer unit layout, the earthing arrangement (such as an earth rod or PEN fault detection system), and the meter box helps future electricians understand how the installation was integrated.

Having the Electrical Installation Certificate, Building Regulations sign-off, and DNO paperwork immediately to hand prevents conveyancing enquiries from stalling.
